Ings said that while refs are upset and legitimately concerned about favoritism toward Williams and against them, an actual boycott isn't likely because of the lack of an umpire union and the relatively small number of top-level officials, of which Ramos is considered one.

And Ramos has defended his actions by insisting that he can not ignore certain rules during matches.

The Herald Sun instead focused on the conflict between Williams and her opponent, writing "such was the gravity of her angry remonstration it later left Osaka, who became Japan's first player to win a Grand Slam singles title, in tears".

The Japanese woman also opened up about what she was thinking when Serena was melting down.

Keothavong does not believe Williams was treated differently than a male player, but acknowledged the incident highlighted there is a "bigger issue". But the U.S. Tennis Association and Women's Tennis Association have come out in support of Williams, which has angered the umpire community.

"I have never seen a women's final as intense and as widely discussed as this one".

"Ramos undertook his duties as an official according to the relevant rule book and acted at all times with professionalism and integrity", the ITF statement added.

These Are the Markets in Hurricane Florence's Path
Panovich forecasts the storm will reach close to Category 4 status with the potential of 140 miles per hour winds. Hurricane to tropical-storm-force winds could extend inland depending on the storm's exact track.

On Monday, the ITF, for whom Ramos is a contracted gold badge umpire, belatedly issued a statement to support his handling of the final.

The report also cited an anonymous source who said officials were considering a boycott of future matches involving Serena Williams. "As an umpire you're supposed to keep the flow of the match going and he did just the opposite".

Several commentators, including tennis great Chris Evert, have pointed out that Ramos missed the opportunity to defuse the situation by first issuing a "soft warning", along the lines of asking Williams to calm down or warning her that she was risking another code violation.

Carlos Ramos spent a day hiding in his hotel room following Serena Williams' tirade in the US Open final, when she accused the Portuguese umpire of sexism.

Williams was fined $17,000 Sunday by the tournament referee's office for her coaching, racket destruction and verbal abuse infractions.

In an interview with his good friend and Tribuna Expresso journalist Miguel Seabra, Ramos said he is doing "fine" and denying that he employs any sort of racist or sexist double standard in his matches.

King said that moving forward, the game has to change, suggesting that coaching should be allowed and umpires need to communicate calls better. "We do not believe that this was done". The beginning of the tournament saw organisers struggle to contend with a heat-wave in NY that resulted in the implementation of a heat policy - the first time ever it was applied in men's matches.
