Presenting the crime statistics for the 2017-2018 financial year in parliament on Tuesday, the head of police crime research and statistics, Maj-Gen Norman Sekhukhune, painted a sorry picture of the fight against crime.

Police committee chair Francois Beukman, who was shocked by this revelation, said that the figure was "unacceptable".

A total of 20,336 people were murdered in the 12 months to March this year, a rise of 6.9 per cent over the previous year and one of the sharpest increases since the end of apartheid 24 years ago.

"South Africans must not take it as a norm that they can be hijacked, robbed and killed every day".

Efforts to fight crime were hampered by repeated changes to top management at law enforcement agencies during former President Jacob Zuma's nearly nine-year tenure, while a stagnating economy and inflation-beating increases for state workers left no room in the budget to retain and hire officers.

Tropical Storm Florence continues its churn toward USA coast
As of 11 PM Saturday, Florence is a strong tropical storm about 800 miles southeast of Bermuda and 1500 miles from Hampton Roads. However, the NHC says that swells generated by Florence are affecting Bermuda and are beginning to reach portions of the U.S.

Nyanga had the highest rate of murder, recording over 300 murders during the period, followed by Umlazi in KwaZulu Natal, with 223 murders (an increase of 19%).

"SA Police Service dropped the ball‚ we literally dropped the ball for such figures to happen‚" he added.

"Here we are today on 20‚000 people [murdered]".

South African police also contributed to the killings?
