The airport was forced to temporarily close its runway as police tried to stop him.

A spokesperson for the Rhône prefecture said of the incident: "Around 10.30 this morning an individual travelling in the wrong direction on the A43 motorway was pursued by members of the motorway CRS (police) and a helicopter from the National Gendarmerie".

A driver crashed through glass doors at Lyon global airport and sped on to the runway before being chased down by police.

An amateur video posted online showed the auto smashing into the building with a bang and showed the view afterward of the smashed doors on either side.

An AFP journalist who was waiting in one of the planes on the runway saw police vehicles pursuing the man.
