The West Nile Virus has killed two people in Greece

State officials said there have been higher rates of mosquitoes carrying the virus this year due to humid weather.

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) announced Fridat that test results from two mosquito pools, or samples, from traps set in Tiverton and Pawtucket on July 30 have been confirmed positive for West Nile Virus (WNV). Mosquito activity peaks at dusk and again at dawn. Because of patient privacy rights under the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), no additional identifying information will be made available to the public.

Although there is no vaccine to protect against West Nile Virus, over-the-counter pain medication can help treat symptoms such as fever.

Most people infected with the virus don't show symptoms, but those who have a reaction may experience fever, nausea, headaches and muscle aches for a few days or weeks. "West Nile virus is here to stay, so the best way to avoid the disease is to reduce exposure to and eliminate breeding grounds for mosquitoes".

This is the first bird that tested positive for West Nile virus in Kenosha County since surveillance for the mosquito-transmitted virus began May 1. One percent of infected people will develop severe illness but the majority of people who are infected will not have symptoms.

August and September are traditionally the peak times for virus transmission of the mosquitoborne virus.

"Make sure to fix or install window and door screens to keep mosquitoes from entering your home". Empty any unused flowerpots and wading pools, and change water in birdbaths frequently.
