An assistant basketball coach at Wake Forest University in North Carolina was in court Thursday after turning himself in for allegedly punching a tourist who later died.

According to police, Jones allegedly punched Sandor Szabo in the face following a confrontation in the early morning hours Sunday that began when Szabo knocked on Jones' auto window thinking it was his Uber ride.

The man exited a white SUV and punched Szabo, leaving him bleeding on the ground, police said.

The family said Szabo was waiting on a ride to take him to the hotel and was knocking on auto windows.

The parents of a Florida man who died after he was punched by an assistant basketball coach at Wake Forest University said Friday they don't accept the coach's condolences.

Jones just completed his second season as an assistant at Wake Forest.

The driver fled the scene and Szabo - unconscious - was rushed to the hospital in critical condition early Sunday, officials said. The assistant coach's next court appearance is scheduled for October 2, according to the Post.

[Sandor's] family and friends are overwhelmed, but not surprised, by the outpouring of love and support from the many people whose lives he touched; he did not know a stranger.

According to Jones's bio at Wake Forest's sports website, he is a Philadelphia native who attended Arkansas Tech and began his basketball coaching career in Washington, D.C., with an AAU squad named Team Takeover.

"The court made the proper ruling with the charges, and the District Attorney's office made the proper ruling with the charges", the statement read, per the Post.

"His handsome spirit and his love of life will remain with us", the company said. We're going to say one thing and that's all.
