Republicans need to keep control of the House to protect President Donald Trump from the Russian Federation investigation, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes said at a recent fundraiser, according to an audio recording released today. Nunes announced previous year that he would step aside from his own committee's investigation into Russian interference after the House Ethics Committee said it was examining allegations that he "may have made unauthorized disclosures of classified information". In it, Nunes discusses how House Republicans still want to impeach Rosenstein-despite assurances from the leadership that that wasn't a priority- but are only waiting to do so until after the Senate confirms Trump's Supreme Court pick, Brett Kavanaugh. The person had paid the $250 to attend the fundraiser that Nunes held with House Republican Conference Chairwoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Wash. Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from overseeing the investigation, thus putting Rosenstein in charge. Firing Rosenstein is also an option, if the impeachment route fails. But, basically, what they're saying here is this is a media invention against Mr. Nunes.

"If we actually vote to impeach, what that does is that triggers the Senate then has to take it up", Nunes said on the audio, adding, that the "Senate only has so much time".

The series of recordings made public by Maddow do not include every question to which Nunes was responding. "I don't think we should be cavalier with this process or term". "The question is the timing of it right before the election".

A secret recording reveals why Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein hasn't been impeached yet despite so many Republicans calling for the action based on what they see as corruption and bias at the Department of Justice. But ultimately let's say the Portuguese came and brought her some stolen emails. Okay, now we have a problem, right? If Trump wants the House Republicans to do this dirty work for him through impeachment, as explained, that can't happen until Kavanaugh is confirmed, for the reasons Nunes gave. "Well, if that's the case, then that's criminal".

Democratic lawmakers and pundits quickly condemned the remarks, saying they indicated Nunes was attempting to obstruct justice by suggesting Rosenstein's investigation, headed by special counsel Robert Mueller, should be quashed.

"This is all political", Nunes said.
