Director Antoine Fuqua discussed the possibility during a conversation with producer Barbara Broccoli who said "it is time" for a "non-white actor" to play the iconic character, the Daily Star reported.

Known for his roles in Thor: Ragnarok, Luther and The Wire, Elba has been mentioned in connection to the 007 role since at least 2012, He's routinely mentioned, along with the likes of Tom Hardy and Tom Hiddleston, as a potential replacement for Craig, who's expected to bow out of the 007 role next year following the release of the 25th Bond film. During the conversation, Broccoli reportedly told Fuqua that "it is time" for a non-white actor to take the lead role, that she was certain it would "happen eventually", and that Elba was the front-runner. Craig will play Bond one last time in the still untitled Bond 25 flick, although he has infamously tried to get out of the role in the past.

"Idris could do it if he was in shape", Fuqua was quoted as saying. You need a guy with physically strong presence.

People online are shaken and stirred once again about the prospect of Idris Elba playing James Bond.

There's also the fact that neither Broccoli or Fuqua explicitly stated that Elba will 100-percent, without a shadow of a doubt play James Bond in the future.

Jose Mourinho tells Manchester United: Sign players or expect hard season
Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer also insisted that Boateng would be "missed" at Bayern and Alaba admitted he felt the same way. Time is running out for Jose Mourinho to secure the centre-back he wants so badly at Manchester United .

However, Elba himself has long played down the idea.

Elba has been a favourite to replace Daniel Craig since talk of him taking over the role began in 2014, after leaked documents from the Sony hack revealed co-chair of the company Amy Pascal put him forward.

In 2016, director Steven Spielberg told Express UK that he "would love to see a Bond of color", and that "Idris would be [his] first choice of Bond" to take over after Craig takes off his tux, sets down his briefcase, and hands in his various guns and gadgets.

"Are we interested in having a Bond character other than being a male?"
