Then came word from police that "of the four people killed in this morning's shootings on Brookside Drive, two were Fredericton police officers".

The incident is ongoing with the gunman is still on the run.

Authorities urged the public to avoid the area of the "active incident" and to "stay in their homes with doors locked". It was a rare instance of gun violence in the Canadian province of New Brunswick.

A suspect is in custody, and the crime scene has been "contained", police said.

City police confirmed the death of the officers in a Tweet as local media images showed emergency vehicles at a tree-lined residential street.

Louise Kennedy, 75, who lives with her dog at 237 Brookside Drive, said the shooting began in the building next door at about 7 a.m. AT.
