About 158 Palestinians have been killed and more than 17,000 others injured by Israeli gunfire during the rallies which peak every Friday.

In a statement, a military spokesperson said the airstrike targeted a squad "that was launching arson balloons from the northern Gaza Strip into Israel".

According to medical sources, one of the wounded was a boy.

Hamas has said such an Egypt-brokered deal must include a significant easing of an 11-year-old border blockade of Gaza and a United Nations -led Gaza reconstruction plan.
