Trump admits son met Russian for information on opponent

Trump acknowledges purpose of meeting with Russian lawyer

Trump was apparently responding to reporting from The Washington Post and other outlets that the president has been increasingly brooding in private about the Mueller probe, particularly as it relates to his son's possible entanglement in the investigation.

Russian Federation has denied allegations by USA intelligence agencies that it meddled and Trump denies collusion, describing the Mueller investigation as a political witch hunt.

One part of Mueller's inquiry and congressional investigations has focused on a meeting months before the November election in Trump Tower in NY between Russian officials, Donald Trump Jr., the president's eldest son, and other campaign aides. Trump claimed that the meeting was "totally legal and done all the time in politics", adding that he had no knowledge about it at the time. "I did not know about it!" Campaign finance law prohibits foreign nationals from making "a contribution or donation of money or other thing of value" in American elections, which legal experts have suggested Trump Jr. could have violated by accepting information - a "thing of value" - from a Russian source.

"The question is how would it be illegal?" "No one has pointed to one".

Another of Mr Trump's tweets over the weekend appears to have stirred trouble at...

When the meeting was first reported by the New York Times, Donald Trump Jr said in a statement that he and Ms Veselnitskaya had mostly discussed a suspended programme for Americans to adopt Russian children.

But since then, the story about the meeting has changed several times, eventually forced by the discovery of emails between the president's eldest son and an intermediary from the Russian government offering damaging information about Trump's opponent, Hillary Clinton.

Any legal battle over whether the president can be forced to testify could go all the way to the US Supreme Court, the lawyer, Jay Sekulow, said on ABC's This Week show.

"Most politicians would have gone to a meeting like the one Don jr attended in order to get info on an opponent", Trump wrote on Twitter.

Trump's July 2017 comments came before we knew he was involved in drafting that initial misleading response; now Trump is in the public record as having authored it.

Lawyers described the statement as "short but accurate", according to The Post.

And they said Trump Jr., Kushner and White House staffers had made a "full disclosure" about that session to Mueller and Congress.

"I had bad information at that time", the lawyer said.

President Trump dismissed news reports Sunday that he's anxious about legal trouble for his son related to the special counsel's investigation, and continued his attacks on the media.

He defended calling the media "The Enemy of the People", and said journalists "purposely cause great division and distrust" and can "cause War!"
