Nasa has named the astronauts who will fly the first missions into space on commercially provided rockets and capsules, starting next year.

In a ceremony at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, the space agency revealed nine astronauts assigned to the first four crewed flights of Boeing's CST-100 Starliner and SpaceX's Crew Dragon capsules.

NASA astronauts Eric Boe and Nicole Aunapu Mann are slated for the test flight of Boeing's Starliner, accompanied by former NASA astronaut Chris Ferguson, who now works as a commercial astronaut for Boeing. Ferguson, now a Boeing employee, will be joined by veteran shuttle pilot Eric Boe and rookie astronaut Nicole Mann on the CST-100's Crew Test Flight, scheduled for liftoff in 2019.

Robert Behnken will be one of two test pilots for the SpaceX Crew Dragon. Additional crew members will be assigned by NASA's worldwide partners in the space station at a later date, the agency said.

No NASA astronaut has rocketed into space from American soil since July 8, 2011, when the space shuttle Atlantis took off from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, laden with 28,000 pounds of supplies for the International Space Station. Flights without any people are expected before the end of 2018, followed by two crewed missions sometime in 2019.

Behnken, Hurley, Boe and Mann are Nasa's first astronauts to be named to the test flights of new United States spacecraft since the March 1978 announcement of the space shuttle's first orbital flight test crews.

Since NASA retired its space shuttles, the agency has had to buy seats on the Russian Soyuz spacecraft to get its crews to the International Space Station.

In a recent report, the Government Accountability Office said that further delays in NASA's so-called "Commercial Crew" program could "disrupt access to" the space station, which would be an enormous embarrassment for NASA after investing about $100 billion to build and operate it. He retired from NASA in 2011 and has been an integral part of Boeing's CST-100 Starliner program.

The Starliner spacecraft is being outfitted at the Commercial Crew and Cargo Processing Facility at the Kennedy Space Center, according to NASA.

Victor Glover: Glover was selected as an astronaut in 2013 after a career in the Navy as a test pilot.

NASA awaits the completion of both companies' test flights before certifying either safe for use to return astronauts on low-Earth-orbit missions. Josh Cassada and Suni Williams will be the second crew for the Starliner and Victor Glover and Mike Hopkins will be the second crew for the Dragon. While she was there in 2007, she completed the Boston Marathon - on a treadmill - in 4 hours 24 minutes, marking the first time an entrant had finished the race from orbit. "This accomplished group of American astronauts, flying on new spacecraft developed by our commercial partners Boeing and SpaceX, will launch a new era of human spaceflight".

Two companies have NASA contracts to provide flights to the ISS between 2019 and 2024: SpaceX and Boeing ba .

Boeing's Starliners will soar on United Launch Alliance's Atlas V rockets. "The person who could do a spacewalk, do some robotics, had a test background if that was required for the mission at hand, and so really looking for a crew member that touches all those bases was really critical going forward", Behnken said.
