An aeroplane of Aeromexico Connect, regional operator of Mexico's largest airline Aeromexico, is pictured at the airstrip at Benito Juarez worldwide airport in Mexico City, Mexico, November 28, 2017.

Frightened passengers scrambled to flee as flames and blinding black smoke erupted around them.

Miraculously all 103 people on board the Mexico City-bound flight survived.

"It's not every day you kind of fall from the sky and live to tell about it", he said.

Jose Luis Corral, a 52-year-old business owner from Portland, Oregon, agreed. "Let's go. So we just ran out and we took whoever was around us with us", Rivera said. An Aeromexico flight crashed in Durango, Mexico Tuesday, July 31. "We were able to get out, and my respects to the crew. It was just a little light rain, super light, like barely hitting the windows", Herrera said. "We started picking up speed and then it started getting windier".

Governor Aispuro said witnesses told him there was a "bang", before the nearly full Embraer 190 fell to the ground without warning at around 16:00 local time (21:00 GMT). "I saw the flames in the front cabin and so that's when the plane stopped and in the back there was already a door open".

A Mexican federal official says an Aeromexico airliner crashed after taking off in the northern state of Durango on Tuesday, but authorities have no immediate word on any casualties. Seat materials and carpets are treated with fire-retardant chemicals to give passengers more precious time to escape before fires spread. Herrera went to the back exit and tried to help as many people down as he could.

But he was thankful to be alive.

Eighty-five people were injured in the accident.

It said the plane involved was an Embraer 190 with a capacity of 100 passengers.

An Illinois priest was on the plane.

Fr. Esequiel Sanchez, rector of Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Des Plaines, suffered minor injuries, but was alert and resting on Wednesday, according to the Archdiocese of Chicago. Crosswinds that gusted higher than expected, caused the plane to veer off the runway and crash into a ravine. "We do not know if it was a mechanical failure", Cardoza said.

The four crew members scrambled to get all 99 passengers - 88 adults, nine children and two infants - off and away from the burning plane after it crashed.
