Tour de France 2018 win confirmed ahead of final stage

Thomas lashes out at 'idiot' fan for contact

Thomas lashes out at 'idiot' fan for contact

Geraint Thomas was still struggling to take in his achievement after wrapping up his first Tour de France victory on Sunday in Paris.

He finished with an advantage of almost two minutes over his nearest rival, Tom Dumoulin, in a performance built on constant pressure, taking small chunks of time out of the Dutchman on seven separate stages, resisting a flurry of attacks in the mountains before retaliating with assaults of his own.

Thomas leads Dumoulin by two minutes and five seconds, Roglic by 2:24 and Froome by 2:37 before the 31-km solo effort against the clock between Saint-Pee-sur-Nivelle and Espelette.

Thomas had built up a lead over the previous twenty stages and tour tradition dictates that the yellow jersey is not contested on the final day.

The Welshman only needed to cross the line in the closing 21st stage on the Champs Elysees and he managed that a few seconds after Norway's Alexander Kristoff had come out on top in a sprint finish.

The cyclist is expected to fly into the United Kingdom later on Monday - but it is not yet known when he will be back in Wales.

"I got into cycling because of this race".

Alaphilippe started the Tour de France hoping to bag stage wins but, after his impressive victory in the Alps at Le Grand Bornand on stage 10, the Quick Step "puncheur" also found himself in the King of the Mountains jersey for the race's most consistent climber. He rode in the 2013 Tour with a broken pelvis, saying it was "the worst pain I've ever experienced on a bike".

Froome was at his side... "I can't believe it", he told reporters today.

"It comes down to tomorrow but I can take confidence with how I'm riding, and what will be will be", he said.

Thomas wanted a first Tour crown, Froome a record-equalling fifth, but there was never tension between the two as the road settled a potential dispute.

American rider Lawson Craddock, who broke his shoulder in the opening stage and sits last overall, also broke down into tears upon reaching the finish.

"We are honest with each other and he committed to me when he had to".

Thomas was a support rider during Froome's four victories but he emerged as Sky's strongest rider in this race when Froome crashed early on and couldn't keep up in the mountains.

The Team Sunweb rider's day did not get off to an ideal start when he could not find his time trial skinsuit in the morning.

He was second after stage nine and took hold of the race leader's yellow jersey on stage 11.

While before him Lance Armstrong, Alberto Contador, or even Chris Froome were not hugely popular in the peloton, Thomas is one of the nice guys of the bunch.

It was Roglic's second Tour victory, having claimed stage 17 in the Alps past year.

That fourth place finish was enough to see Martin move up one place in the overall classification as he leap-frogged Nario Quintana into eighth place, 6:39 behind Thomas.
