A polar bear was shot dead after it attacked a guard leading tourists off a cruise ship near the North Pole.

The injured person was immediately provided with medical care and flown to a hospital with a rescue helicopter.

The Associated Press said that 18 cruise ships are set to dock this week in Svalbard's largest settlement. If the opportunity presents itself, polar bears will also consume carcasses, such as those of dead whales.

News of the shooting was criticized on social media by observers who blamed the cruise line for intruding on the polar bear's habitat.

On Saturday, the MS Bremen cruise ship landed on the island and polar bear guards went ashore to survey the land.

"He was flown out, was responsive, and is now undergoing medical treatment", Etminan said, adding that the victim was not in a life-threatening condition.

Etminan said the man was a "polar bear guard" traveling aboard the "MS Bremen" because all cruise ships traveling in the northern region are obliged to have polar bear guards on board.

Tourism in the area has increased in recent years and is at its highest in the summer months.

The polar bear involved in the attack was shot dead "in an act of self-defense", according to the company.

Critics lashed out at the tourists for travelling to a region with polar bears and then kill the animals when they become unsafe. "Morons", British actor-comedian Ricky Gervais tweeted.

"Landings are possible only in a few places; these are not there to serve the objective of polar bear observation, on the contrary: polar bears are only observed from aboard ships, from a safe distance".

Scientists believe human activity and climate change have contributed to an increase in polar bear attacks, which are most likely to occur when the animals are very hungry. A promotional film (see above) highlights wildlife, including polar bears.

The 3,000 or so polar bears living on the main island of the Svalbard archipelago outnumber humans, according to the Norwegian government.
