Liquid water lake discovered on Mars

Alan Duffy, an astronomer from Swinburne University and the lead scientist of Australia's Science Channel, said: "This is a stunning result that suggests water on Mars is not a temporary trickle like previous discoveries but a persistent body of water that provides the conditions for life for extended periods of time".

The presence of water under the Martian polar ice caps has always been suspected but not seen until now, the study said.

The detection was made using the Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionosphere Sounding (MARSIS) instrument on European Space Agency's Mars Express spacecraft. They found readings near Mars' south pole were a lot like those that come from lakes under ice sheets in Earth's polar regions. The depth is harder to gauge, but ESA researchers estimate that it's at least one metre (39 inches) deep, buried beneath 1.5 kilometres (0.8 miles) of ice and dust.

"Our mantra back then was 'follow the water.' That was the one phrase that captured everything", Hubbard said. "A lake, not some kind of meltwater filling some space between rock and ice, as happens in certain glaciers on Earth", Orosei told the British media giant. Until now, scientists had only confirmed significant amounts of water in the form of ice, primarily located at the poles.

Beneath this, researchers spotted something unusual.

Those pulses reflected 29 sets of radar samples that created a map of drastic change in signal nearly a mile below the surface.

We discovered water on Mars.

I can't wait for forever together. "Yes a million times over", Kloss wrote on Instagram , along with an emoji of a diamond ring . Josh Kushner celebrated his engagement on Instagram as well, posting a photo of Kloss with the caption "fiancée".

"This is where we get sufficient protection from harmful radiation, and the pressure and temperature rise to more favourable levels". Water is considered a fundamental ingredient for life.

However, Kral, in an email, described the Wednesday announcement as saying "nothing new" about the possibility of life on Mars.

The water's temperature and chemistry could also pose a problem for any potential martian organisms.

The researchers said it could take years to verify whether something is actually living in this body of water that resembles a subglacial lake on Earth, perhaps with a future mission drilling through the ice to sample the water below.

"It's plausible that the water may be an extremely cold, concentrated brine, which would be pretty challenging for life", said Dr. Claire Cousins, an astrobiologist. Still, this doesn't mean life couldn't exist within the lake.

Scott Hubbard, a professor of astronautics at Stanford University who served as NASA's first Mars program director in 2000, described the finding "tremendously exciting".

"There are likely similar water deposits below the ground all across Mars". The presence of the underground lake was discovered by scientists at the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF), in Rome, DailyMail cited.
