Sen. McConnell supports changing Papa John's stadium name

Papa John Schnatter- The Founder CEO & President of Papa John's Pizza

Schnatter has resigned from the university's board of trustees.

Really good, it turns out, because Schnatter stepped down as Papa John's chairman this week after using a racial slur in a conference call.

Schnatter used the offensive term while undergoing training on how to avoid future PR disasters with media agency Laundry Service, after he a year ago controversially blamed NFL national anthem protests for his company's sagging pizza sales. I have decided, with the support of our Board of Trustees, to rename our football stadium "Cardinal Stadium" and to remove John Schnatter's name from the Center for Free Enterprise at our College of Business effective immediately.

While many have put their relationships with the brand on hold, there were a few teams across the league that made a decision to maintain their deals with Papa John's, disavowing Schnatter's comments and praising the brand for its swift action, while cited long-running partnerships with local store owners and operators who shared their values.

Pizza-craving baseball fans have other - and, frankly, better - options at Target Field, including Pizza Lucé (Section 234), by-the-slice Freschetta (Sections 122 and 318), and stone-oven personals (Carew Atrium).

In addition to appearing in TV ads in the past, Schnatter's image has been on packaging and in a logo that usually is all over the website of the Louisville, Kentucky-based company.

Several current Louisville football players expressed on Thursday a desire to have the name of the stadium changed as well.

Schnatter, Founder, Chairman & CEO of Papa John's International, Inc. rings the NASDAQ Opening Bell at NASDAQ MarketSite on January 31, 2014 in New York City.

Schnatter had used the slur during a media training exercise in May, Forbes reported this week. Following the phone call, the agency ended its relationship with Papa John's. The company's shares, which had fallen almost 5 percent Wednesday, rebounded 11 percent Thursday after the company announced Schnatter's resignation as chairman. "I am sure that he will say that he is sorry that he has hurt so many people, including - I know - students that he cares a great deal about".

The company can not afford to alienate customers, with sales already under pressure from rivals such as Domino's.

Papa John's is the world's third-largest pizza chain, with more than 350 outlets in the United Kingdom and 4,900 restaurants worldwide. Today, it has more than 3,400 locations in North America.
