Former Trump Campaign Chair Paul Manafort Boasts of VIP Treatment in Jail

A mug shot of Paul Manafort, President Trump's former campaign manager, was released Thursday after he was transferred to another holding facility, according to a report.

US District Court Judge T.S. Ellis ordered Manafort's move to the Alexandria facility from the Northern Neck jail in rural Virginia, where he has been held since June 15 after his bail was revoked due to allegations of witness tampering brought by the special counsel Robert Mueller's office. He's awaiting two separate trials - one in Washington, D.C., and one in Alexandria, Virginia.

The judge wasn't swayed, and he again ordered Manafort to move jails.

Prosecutors described in their own court filing Wednesday how Manafort had told people in phone calls from the jail that he is "being treated like a "VIP" and has reviewed all the documents needed for his bank fraud trial.

Though Manafort's lawyers have said he spends almost all of his days in solitary confinement, prosecutors described his living arrangements as a "private, self-contained living unit, which is larger than other inmates' units" with its own bathroom and shower.

Manafort had been typing emails on his attorneys' laptop that the lawyers would send once they were outside the jail, according to a government court filing this week.

The Alexandria Detention Center houses about 400 inmates, including federal inmates under an agreement with the U.S. Marshals Service.

The conditions under which he's being held are considered standard for numerous high-profile inmates housed in the jail's VIP section because of security concerns. In Alexandria there are no private electronics for inmates, and Manafort was photographed in his green jumpsuit when his mugshot was taken Thursday. But on Tuesday, Manafort resisted being moved to Alexandria, arguing that while the city jail would be more convenient, he did not want to adjust to new circumstances so close to trial.

Paul Manafort's complaints about his life in jail backfired spectacularly Wednesday.

Ellis brushed aside those worries in a new order, saying that officials at the federal lockup in Alexandria have experience handling inmates such as "foreign and domestic terrorists, spies and traitors". "It is surprising and confusing when the counsel identifies a problem and then opposes the most logical solution to that problem", Ellis wrote Wednesday, adding, "Defense counsel has not identified any general or specific threat to defendant's safety at the Alexandria Detention Center".

The evidence would be used to show that Manafort had knowledge about the disclosure rules under FARA and that it was not a simple mistake that he did not register for his work for pro-Russian politicians in Ukraine.
