A dozen Russian intelligence officers are facing new USA federal indictments alleging they hacked into American computers with the explicit intention of interfering with the 2016 presidential election. They used the Malaysian server to log into the Twitter account of the online hacker persona Guccifer 2.0, and the same server was used to register websites used for hacking the Democratic committees, according to the indictment.

In addition to targeting the DNC, the Department of Justice alleges the Russian intelligence operatives also targeted: "state boards of elections, secretaries of state, and U.S. companies that supplied software and other technology related to the administration of elections to steal voter data stored on those computers".

U.S. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein (C) holds a news conference at the Department of Justice July 13, 2018 in Washington, DC.

One group of officers were tasked with infiltrating computers and stealing data, while another worked to distribute it through anonymous channels in the U.S.

Among the new details: the conspirators allegedly first tried to compromise email accounts used by Clinton's personal office on July 27, 2016, the same day that Trump appeared to urge Russian Federation to go after her emails at a campaign press conference in Florida.

There is also no allegation in Friday's charges that "any American was a knowing participant in the alleged unlawful activity", the indictment says.

"The defendants falsely claimed DCLeaks was American and that Guccifer 2.0 was a sole Romanian hacker", Rosenstein said.

"There's no allegation that the conspiracy changed the vote count or affected any election result."
"It's important for the president to know what evidence we have of foreign interference".

Earlier Friday, Trump said he would question Putin about Russian election meddling when the two meet in Helsinki.

It was a well-planned, high-tech, and ultimately successful cyber-operation, carried out by the military intelligence agency of a major country.

He said: "I briefed the president".

Schumer says Trump should cancel his meeting with Putin until Russian Federation takes steps to prove it won't interfere in future elections.

"The indictment charges 11 of the defendants with conspiracy to commit computer crimes, eight counts of aggravated identity theft, and conspiracy to launder money".

The indictment does not allege that Trump campaign associates were involved in the hacking efforts or that any American was knowingly in contact with Russian intelligence officers.

Justice Department special counsel Robert Mueller is continuing to investigate whether anyone in the United States conspired with the Russian attack on the election.

Some in Congress are calling on President Donald Trump to cancel his upcoming summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin after new indictments were announced in relation to the Mueller probe.

We want to hear from you.

Glenn Kirschner said on CNN Friday that Mueller's work has proceeded in the standard fashion of RICO cases - which stands for the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. "But it makes it very hard to do something with Russian Federation". Anything you do, it's always going to be, "Oh, Russia, he loves Russia".

The GOP lawmaker, who is retiring after this Congress, said that he's "pleased Russian Federation is being held accountable for their actions against our country".
