Trump nominates conservative Brett Kavanaugh to Supreme Court

Democrats' long-shot plan to stop Trump's Supreme Court pick

While some Democrats promised a stern effort to block the 53-year-old Kavanaugh - who has served 12 years on the most influential US appeals court - Trump's fellow Republicans control the Senate by a narrow margin and can ensure confirmation if they avoid defections from their ranks. Kavanaugh became Trump's second lifetime appointment to the nation's highest judicial body in his 18 months in office. Ashley Estes and Brett Kavanaugh met while they were both serving on Bush's staff. Ashley Estes Kavanaugh is now the town manager of a village in Maryland.

He is also a robust supporter of the executive power of the presidency. Kavanaugh worked on the effort by Bush's campaign to halt the recount of votes in Florida in the disputed presidential election between Bush and Al Gore in 2000.

The Pittsburgh-based federal appeals judge was the runner up to Justice Neil Gorsuch for the Supreme Court nomination previous year.

In recent days, the Kentucky Republican - who oversaw the successful confirmation of Justice Neil Gorsuch a year ago - has played a significant behind-the-scenes role, consulting the President and his team daily on strategy and the political realities that await any nominee.

Casey says the list of judges Trump has used to find a Supreme Court nominee is the "fruit of a corrupt process straight from the D.C. swamp". "Kavanaugh would use the Court as a tool to doom all women to that fate".

Like the 50-year-old Gorsuch, Kavanaugh potentially could serve on the high court for decades.

"My judicial philosophy is straightforward: a judge must be independent and must interpret the law, not make the law". During a brief introduction of Kavanaugh, the president stated, "What matters is not a judge's political views but whether they can set aside those views to do what the law and the Constitution require".

Speaking at the White House, Kavanaugh pledged to preserve the Constitution and said that "a judge must be independent and must interpret the law, not make the law". Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, said she would review Kavanaugh's writings on and off the bench and "pay careful attention" to the answers he gives during his confirmation hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Republicans on the Appropriations panel batted down Democratic proposals that undercut the administration's "zero-tolerance" policy of prosecuting and detaining migrants caught entering the US.

Republicans hold a slim 51-49 Senate majority, and with ailing Senator John McCain battling cancer in his home state of Arizona they now can muster only 50 votes. McConnell has a 51-49 Senate majority, narrowed further by the absence of ailing Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, sidelined by cancer, the administration can not afford to lose many votes.

So we will now have an intensely conservative Supreme Court in which five of the nine justices were appointed by Republican presidents, despite the fact that in six of the past seven presidential elections, the Democratic candidate won the most votes.

The Senate's top Republican, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, hailed a "superb choice" in Kavanaugh and urged senators to "put partisanship aside and consider his legal qualifications with the fairness, respect, and seriousness that a Supreme Court nomination ought to command". His final options were all young federal judges who could help remake the court for decades to come with precedent-shattering rulings on issues such as abortion, guns and health care. White House aides said they have prepared "rollout packages" for the four finalists.

Kavanaugh is a favourite of the GOP legal establishment, and his arrival as President Donald Trump's nominee was greeted on Capitol Hill with praise from Republicans and skepticism from Democrats.

"One Republican senator can decide the fate of any Supreme Court nominee", said Sen. In just two cases this year, the court's radical conservatives limited the ability of workers to join together to file class actions lawsuits to redress workplace grievances such as wage theft and forbid members of labor unions from collecting fair share fees from public sector workers who choose not to join but who the union is required to represent.

Kavanaugh later contributed to prosecutor Kenneth Starr's report into Clinton's affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky.

If Kavanaugh wins confirmation, he would cement the conservative 5-4 tilt on the Supreme Court.
