Cotton: Democrats’ Opposition to Kavanaugh a ‘Laughable Political Game’

Twice a Supreme Court runner-up Hardiman is back at work

Both voted against Trump's effort to repeal the Obama-era Affordable Care Act, and they objected furiously to a measure that would have stripped funding from women's health organization Planned Parenthood.

If Kavanaugh is confirmed, it would mean a significant shift to the right for the Supreme Court, according to the Judicial Common Space system, a metric developed by political scientists Lee Epstein, Andrew D. Martin, Jeffrey A. Segal, and Chad Westerland. It is unlikely that Kavanaugh would land at the outermost pole of the court, where Justices Clarence Thomas and Neil Gorsuch, Trump's first appointee, have aligned.

Kavanaugh worked as a White House staff secretary for President George W. Bush before Bush nominated him for a seat on the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia.

Speaking to Al Jazeera, Nihad Awad, the national executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) said that the Senate must grill Kavanaugh on his views on civil rights and presidential powers. More extensive document production - particularly to the scale Democrats appear ready to request - will take time and could push back the current aggressive target for hearings and votes. If a doomed stand against Kavanaugh strengthens the GOP's hold on the Senate, conservative judges will be easier to confirm - and liberal ones more hard, should a Democrat capture the White House. "But even if Kavanaugh's added to the court, I'm slightly more optimistic the court takes a Second Amendment case, but it's not fully clear to me", said Professor Blackman.

Compared to their initial attacks on Kavanaugh, Democrats are putting less stress in recent days on the possibility that he could threaten Roe v Wade, a landmark 1973 Supreme Court decision supporting abortion rights. Kavanaugh has stated that he considers Roe v. Wade binding and would seek to uphold it, though he has ruled in some cases to place restrictions on abortion.

Democrats are anxious that Kavanaugh will join with the court's other four conservative members to reverse legalized abortion in the United States. He supported releasing the girl to a sponsor, where she could obtain an abortion if she chose to do so and leave the government out of it. The GOP is praying for unity while hoping to see support from a few red-state Democrats.

As part of that strategy, Democrats are focusing on Republicans Susan Collins of ME and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, who both helped doom the repeal of the health care law.

While Republicans reaffirmed their intention to process the nomination well ahead of the November midterm elections, Democrats argued Kavanaugh's record deserves painstaking scrutiny that must not be rushed.

Democrats plan to paint the Supreme Court appointee as a threat to abortion rights. The left understands that Kavanaugh's nomination is an existential threat to its activist judicial agenda, so it is going to throw everything it has at him in a multimillion-dollar sliming.

So Trump's pick could affect the court's decisions for many years into the future. "Because he has written and spoken prolifically on many issues of deep concern, we believe his positions merit close scrutiny". The president has faced allegations of sexual harassment and remains under investigation for obstruction of justice in the Russian Federation election meddling investigation.

But: Donnelly has also demonstrated a willingness to vote against Trump on big votes, like the tax bill. "So, Trump picked the guy who thinks presidents shouldn't be prosecuted". He said the judge noted that he had proposed that Congress impose limits on investigations of sitting presidents.
