Jelena Ostapenko beat Aliaksandra Sasnovich from Belarus in straight sets

Contesting just her fourth tournament after taking more than a year out of tennis for the birth of her first child, the 181st-ranked Williams will play German 13th seed Julia Goerges for a place in Saturday's (Sunday NZT) final.

That is going to change now.

Goerges is at the other end of the spectrum, preparing for her maiden major semi-final after also recovering from a set down to beat Dutchwoman Kiki Bertens 3-6 7-5 6-1.

Bertens, the first Dutchwoman to reach the last 16 since Michaella Krajicek, sister of former men's champion Richard, did so in 2007, followed up her win over Venus Williams in the third round with a display of power and poise.

None of the top eight women's seeds have reached the quarter-finals for the first time since seedings were introduced in 1927 - although Williams' 25th seeding is misleading.

She now has a 39-35 record when losing the first set at a major. "After the first set, I just said, 'Let's go three sets.' I just kept fighting". "Sometimes I feel I can fight".

She has won 19 straight matches at the All England Club and will appear in her 11th semifinal.

Did Maisie Williams just reveal ‘Game of Thrones’ ending?
Adding fuel to the rumour fire, William's co-star Lena Headey, who plays Cersei, commented on the post with the word "Queen". "Here's to the adventures to come #lastwomanstanding #barely #immasleepforthenextfouryears #justkiddingidontsleep ".

Federer was followed by Serena Williams, she of the seven Wimbledon trophies among her 23 majors, who was hardly challenged in a 6-2, 6-2 win against 120th-ranked qualifier Evgeniya Rodina of Russian Federation. Williams is 3-0 against Giorgi in the singles format.

Ostapenko also reached the quarterfinals a year ago in her best Wimbledon showing, losing to eventual runner-up Venus Williams.

She is unbeaten at the championships since 2014, winning the title in 2015 and 2016. 21-year-old Ostapenko is also the youngest active player to have reached multiple Slam semifinals; the next youngest is 23-year-old Madison Keys.

She controlled the game and finished the first set clinching 8 winners to 6 and committing 6 unforced errors to Serena's two.

The way she is striking the ball and moving in her second Grand Slam back after childbirth she would arguably be favourite for the title even with the likes of Garbine Muguruza and Simona Halep still in contention.

The 13th-seeded Goerges had never made it past the third round in her 10 previous appearances at the All England Club and had gone out in the first round for the past five years.
