Fighting time, high waters, divers prepare to rescue second group of Thai boys from cave

"If Phra Pirun helps us, we might be able to do it very quickly", Narongsak said, again invoking the god of rain, who is widely revered in Thailand.

A Thai navy official confirmed to Reuters that a boy was freed from the cave on Monday afternoon local time.

"The divers that were assembled from many countries are proud to have conducted this operation until its success", Narongsak said. The group became stranded after torrential monsoon rains caused the system to flood and were missing for nine days before being discovered by two British divers early last week.

Authorities have said the mission could take three or four days to complete.

Four of the boys were safely rescued on Sunday after rescuers carried out a risky operation, amid fears the waters will rise again to a unsafe level.

Narongsak Osottanakorn, the rescue mission chief, said that the same divers who carried out the operation yesterday are also involved in the second phase, along with additional personnel. Four boys have been rescued on Sunday and efforts have resumed to try and bring the remaining 9 to safety.

The anxious families say they have forgiven 25-year-old soccer coach Ekapol Chanthawong who led the boys on what was supposed to be an innocent adventure in cave exploring more than two weeks ago.

Progress came more easily on Monday, with replenished oxygen tanks and tightened guide ropes.

Among those are USA military partners, British cave diving experts - including the two men who first located the boys a week ago - and rescue workers from Australia, China and other countries.

There was no word on the condition of any of the people brought out on Monday.

Part of the complicated rescue included the boys having to walk on their feet through muddy and rocky areas that were not underwater.

The foursome were taken to Prachanukroh hospital in Chiang Mai province, northern Thailand, where they have undergone a number of tests, x-rays and health checks.

Narongsak said the first four rescued boys had not been identified out of respect for the families whose sons were still trapped, adding that the boys were being kept away from their parents due to fear of infection. The four evacuated on Monday were also hospitalized, although their condition was not announced.

Authorities have said the boys are being held close to divers and wear oxygen masks to enable normal breathing.

"If everything turns out as we've expected, whether it be the weather or readiness of the rescue team, there should be nothing to worry about", Chalongchai said. Four boys and their football coach are still trapped inside the cave.

"We have not been told which child has been brought out".

'The doctors are evaluating when the parents and other relatives can visit the boys in hospital.

"I'm hoping for good news".

They are the second batch to undertake the perilous journey out of Tham Luang cave in Mae Sai district in Chiang Rai.

Getting to and from where the boys are has been an exhausting round trip, even for the experienced divers. Soldiers, medics, engineers and volunteers in yellow shirts milled around but the mood was relaxed. "But we will have a psychiatrist to evaluate them". One was that it was unknown how safe and dry the area where they had taken shelter would stay as Thailand's rainy season, which lasts until at least late October, picks up pace.
