Spain have named Luis Enrique as their new head coach after Fernando Hierro stepped down from temporary charge following their last-16 World Cup exit to Russia, the Spanish Football Federation (SFF) have announced.

The 2010 champions were knocked out of the tournament by hosts Russian Federation in the second round, losing 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

Before that, Spain were humiliated at the hands of the Netherlands in 2014 and beaten by Italy at Euro 2016 - their 2008-2012 winning streak but a distant memory.

The 48-year-old has been out of work since leaving Barcelona last summer.

"After many kilometers of walking together, the Royal Spanish Football Federation and Fernando Hierro put an end to their relationship once the participation of Spain in the World Cup in Russia ended".

Lopetegui had taken the Real Madrid job without informing his employers, a betrayal that left Rubiales and the Spanish FA seething.

England have won the World Cup just once, when they hosted it in 1966, but the public and pundits are starting to dream. Pending victory, Gareth Southgate's squad will play either France or Belgium in the final, held on Sunday.

A formal unveiling of Enrique is likely to happen next week and Rubiales said: 'We have not spoken to anybody else - only Luis Enrique'.

He previously coached Celta Vigo and Barca's reserves, as well as Serie A side Roma.

A former Spain global, Luis Enrique represented both Real Madrid and Barcelona during his playing career.

According a UK Sun report, the Real Madrid legend who took over the position just before the ongoing world Cup in Russian Federation, has also distanced himself from his former job as sports director.

A statement said the former Real Madrid player had "declined" to return to his previous role and will instead "undertake new professional challenges".
