On Friday, the accountability court judge Mohammad Bashir announced the verdict, handing Nawaz Sharif a 10-year prison term and an £8 million fine in the Avenfield properties reference. Maryam was also convicted and sentenced to seven years in prison. "He has undergone disqualification and life imprisonment before", she said in a tweet.

"Justice has been massacred", Maryam's husband Safdar said after the verdict.

The Sharifs had filed an application on Thursday requesting the court to delay the verdict in the Avenfield reference and grant a seven-day exemption in the wake of Nawaz's wife, Begum Kulsoom Nawaz's deteriorating health.

Sharif and Maryam are now in London visiting Kulsoom, who is suffering from cancer and is undergoing treatment there.
