Embattled EPA chief Scott Pruitt resigns amid scandals

Mr Pruitt, the head of America's Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), faced a series of controversies over his travel spending, security costs, dealings with industry lobbyists and alleged misuse of government resources. "Pruitt created a culture of corruption at EPA that has never been seen before in a federal agency, and for months President Trump idly stood by and allowed him to do further harm". "We have made tremendous progress and the future of the EPA is very bright", Trump wrote. "However the unrelenting attacks on me personally, my family, are unprecedented and have taken a sizable toll on all of us". After giving $300,000 to the President's inauguration fund, the New York Times reported that Murray gave Trump a wish list of environmental regulations he wanted rolled back and the President instructed Pruitt to get to work on the list.

Pruitt, a Republican, had appeared Wednesday at a White House picnic for Independence Day, wearing a red-checked shirt and loafers with gold trim. As Oklahoma's former attorney general, he waged a legal fight against the environmental rules implemented by the agency he eventually would head. In a statement, independent Senator Bernie Sanders said: "Scott Pruitt was the worst EPA administrator in the history of the agency". The reason Pruitt persisted so long is the same reason why his environmentalist foes shouldn't break out the organic Champagne: The administrator was doing exactly what his boss wanted.

Twitter meme creator Darth tweeted with a picture of other Trump administration officials who have also resigned, including former Press Secretary Sean Spicer and former Chief of Staff Reince Priebus.

Pruitt has been buffeted by numerous revelations about extravagant spending, including $1,560 for a dozen fountain pens, $3,000 on "tactical pants" and "tactical polos", $43,000 on a soundproof phone booth for his office and $120,000 on a trip to Italy. His firm was paid $300,000 a year ago. John Barrasso (R-WY) and James Inhofe (R-OK) - who voted to approve his nomination in February.

'possible' North Korea nuclear deal may not 'work out'
Earlier this week, the monitoring group 38 North reported that North Korea had made rapid improvements to a nuclear reactor. The lone weapons facility that has been acknowledged by North Korea is in Yongbyon, 100 kilometres north of Pyongyang .

Whether it's Wheeler or someone else, Brandy Doyle, campaign manager for social change network CREDO, said her group has no doubt Trump will appoint another "fossil fuel industry stooge as Pruitt's replacement".

Sen. Tom Carper, the top Democrat on the Environment and Public Works Committee, said Pruitt made the EPA "a punchline". In addition, he was formerly chief of staff to Sen.

"It has become increasingly challenging for the EPA to carry out its mission with the administrator under investigation", said Barrasso, who is from Wyoming.

Matt Dempsey, the managing director of FTI Consulting who worked with Wheeler on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, said he fully expects Wheeler will carry out President Trump's agenda. This differs from Pruitt, who drew attention not only for his aggressive moves to cut back regulations but also for mounting scandals and questions about potential ethics violations.
