Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel now leads Hamilton by one point with three races to go - including the German GP on July 22 and in Hungary a week later - before Formula One's summer break.

The Austrian Grand Prix had a few unexpected twists and turns, with both Mercedes AMG F1 machines retiring from the race, while Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen managed to take a fine victory at the event. I just had to drive around the issue.

Lewis Hamilton says it's impossible to say how the F1 season will pan out; especially in a season where both Mercedes and Ferrari have at times appeared dominant while other times have been way off the pace.

"Obviously, we know it was a hard weekend and of course we would have all hoped, wished that it wasn't the way it was but what doesn't kill you only makes you stronger and honestly the spirit within the team is stronger than it has ever been", continued Hamilton. This left Hamilton 7.7 seconds ahead of Verstappen when a Virtual Safety Car was deployed to allow for Bottas' car to be removed. At the front, Verstappen led his Red Bull team-mate Ricciardo by 4.9 seconds with Raikkonen third, a second down, and Hamilton a further six-tenths adrift.

The Haas cars of Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen finished in fourth and fifth respectively, ahead of the Force India cars of Esteban Ocon and Sergio Perez.

There was encouragement for McLaren at the end of a week that has seen Eric Boullier resign and a restructuring take place, with Fernando Alonso sixth, 1.7s slower than Vettel as the gulf between the top three teams and the rest was emphasized on the high-downforce circuit.

Hamilton trails Sebastian Vettel by a point in the battle for the Formula One title after the defending champion retired from the Austrian Grand Prix when he lost fuel pressure. "I told Max he had a very good race", said Vettel. Nico Hulkenberg ("Reno") - 34 10. "It's my mistake. Do what you can", replied Mercedes strategist James Vowles. Driving with wearing and blistered tires, Hamilton was forced to change his tires in the latter part of the race, dropping him from the lead to fourth place.

The Briton is confident Austria will not prove season-defining, that his team have overcome the gremlins and will bounce back in style at his home race on Sunday. "I'm going to keep it free because I'm going to be in Russian Federation that day, supporting them".

"From previous experience in practice sessions, I know it can happen".

It was clear that tyre wear was emerging as a critical factor.

"It's the same as every year really but the British Grand Prix is the most special in the sense of all the races that we get to do for me", said Hamilton in the Thursday press conference.
