The World Cup's round of 16 will feature zero African teams for the first time. Senegal are going home having picked up more yellow cards than Japan, which sounds silly even in writing but there you have it.

After his display in their last match against Poland, Colombian hopes had again been pinned on the shoulders of Rodriguez, who had spearheaded their run to the last quarter-finals four years ago. They are the only African team left.

Here's the goal, a thundering header by Yerry Mina in the 74th minute, that won Group H for Colombia.

Colombia will face the runner-up of Group G, which will be either England or Belgium. Senegal became the first team ever eliminated by a new tiebreaker: number of yellow cards.

Japan are Asia's sole representative, while Mexico are the only team left from the CONCACAF nations who made it to Russian Federation 2018. "He can do better, but today he was better than against Poland and he needs to do better against Colombia". "Despite that we were leading twice and what is annoying were the two goals (conceded)".

Colombia's travelling hordes raised the volume in an attempt to inspire their side but though they saw more of the ball after the break, Radamel Falcao remained ineffective and Senegal retained menace on the break as gaps appeared.

Senegal kept trying to get a goal that would have sent it to the next round, but Colombia defended well. But their 2-1 defeat to Japan spoke volumes of their shortcomings.

Late Saudi strike settles send-off with Egypt
Saudi Arabi kicked off the tournament with a match to forget as they were thrashed 5-0 by Russian Federation in the opening game. In the group's other match, taking place simultaneously, Mo Salah has also scored his second goal of the competition for Egypt .

They had looked set to take the lead in the 17th minute when Liverpool forward Sadio Mane went down in the area under a challenge from Davinson Sanchez and referee Milorad Mazic pointed to the spot. Rather Los Cafeteros entered the football extravaganza as one of the strongest teams. Sometimes, a World Cup final is decided on penalties.

Colombia's fans cheer prior to their Russian Federation 2018 World Cup Group H match against Senegal at the Samara Arena in Samara on June 28, 2018. Current coach Aliou Cisse was the captain of that squad.

Unfortunately, they could not, and now, for the first time since 1982, Africa will not have a representative in the knockout stage of a World Cup.

Colombia midfielder Abel Aguilar was unavailable after he was injured and taken off the field on a stretcher in the first half against Poland.

Sanchez thwarted Senegal's star man again on 26 minutes after Mane had skilfully turned away from Mina.

Each team controlled its destiny and would advance with a win.

But Pekerman said Colombia will not be aiming for anything less than a win. Attendance was announced at 41,970. Rodriguez scored both goals, including one that was voted goal of the tournament.
