Theresa may speech: PM claims taxpayers will fund £20billion NHS boost

The controversial Vote Leave battle bus saying the country would have an extra £350m for the NHS per week if we left the EU

Prime Minister Theresa May has claimed a "Brexit dividend" will be one of the ways the United Kingdom will pay for flushing more money into the NHS over the next seven years.

Explaining her funding plan for the NHS, she said: "Some of the money I've announced today will come from the annual subscription fee that we no longer pay to the European Union after we have left".

The infamous "We send the European Union £350 million a week: let's fund our NHS instead" slogan plastered on a big red coach by the Leave campaign has always been proven misleading.

But that figure, famously advertised on the side of the pro-Brexit campaign bus back in 2016, ignored the money that Britain gets back from the EU.

Today's announcement confirms that Theresa May has failed to give the NHS the funding it needs, and much of the funding announced today is based on wishful thinking.

The Prime Minister has also said that "across the nation taxpayers will have to contribute a bit more in a fair and balanced way to support the NHS we all use".

The Prime Minister has said that this will mean an average increase of around 3.4% in spending a year from 2019/20, once inflation is accounted for.

"The multi-year settlement will enable partners to work together and focus on improving services, delivering better health outcomes and ensuring greater access to the best treatments and technologies for all NHS patients". Tax rises? Borrowing? What's plan B?

The Health Foundation has been clear: the proposed funding increase is not enough.

Gary Lineker's F-word reaction to Harry Kane's England victor
Tom Law, 29 and Clark Roberts 30, both from Coventry, emerged from the ground singing " Harry Kane , he's one of our own". Pockets of seats were left empty in the 45,000-seater Volgograd Arena, with the official attendance reaching 41,064.

Mr Hunt dismissed findings from the Office for Budget Responsibility and Institute for Fiscal Studies that said there would be a net cost, not a dividend, from Brexit.

The NHS budget increase was expected to take place over five years, reaching the full amount in 2023/24, the newspapers said.

"It recognises the superhuman efforts made by staff over the last few years to maintain services in the face of rapidly growing demand".

But the Sky Data poll found 47% of people do not think there will be "Brexit dividend", compared to 34% who did.

Proposals under consideration for funding the pledge alongside the Brexit dividend are believed to include freezing the thresholds for the personal allowance, the rate at which people start paying income tax, and for the 40p rate from April 2020.

Mr Hunt acknowledged that the extra cash for the NHS will not cover social care, but said a long-term plan was being prepared on the issue. Without tax increases, Hammond would nearly certainly be forced to abandon his plans to erase the budget deficit by the middle of the next decade.

An official spokeswoman from May's Number 10 Downing Street said she did not have the details available.

"If the Conservatives do manage to publish the detail of their insufficient 3.4% increase, then Labour's fully costed plans to raise taxes for the top 5% and big business will top up NHS spending growth to around the 5% which is needed".
