"The Band's Visit" - which chronicles the adventures of a band of Egyptian musicians - won more Tony awards than any other show on Sunday night.

While the U.S. censored the expletives, Aussie viewers were gifted the moment in all of its glory and Twitter was set alight. Many critics have tapped "The Band's Visit" as their odds-on favorite to be crowned best new musical.

"I think we want ultimately the tone of the night to be about positivity and inclusively, and certainly we're both people who are politically minded, but that's not really what this particular night is about", Bareilles said. And the 25th-anniversary production of Tony Kushner's Angels in America (full title: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes) also reigned, winning Best Revival of a Play and acting awards for Andrew Garfield and Nathan Lane.

"We're getting messages from kids all over the Middle East thanking us and telling us how transformative our representation is for them".

The two played side by side and it certainly seemed like it was a sweet song-until the original musical number revealed it was a tribute to all the Tony Award losers of the past-just like them!

Garfield won his first Tony, for best leading actor in a play, and dedicated the win to the LGBTQ community, who he said fought and died for the right to love.

And one of the biggest moments was Bruce Springsteen performing "My Hometown".

According to Nelson , when a maintenance crew managed to get the animal to leave the ledge, it only jumped onto a nearby building. Paul, Minnesota, climbed more than 20 stories up the side of the UBS Plaza, causing waves of anxiety across the nation.

Meanwhile on Twitter, the general consensus was that the goat deserved a Tony Award, too.

Glenda Jackson, 82, won best actress in a play for her fiery portrayal of an elderly woman in "Three Tall Women", and her co-star, Laurie Metcalf, won featured actress. The revival of "Angels in America" had 11 and the two-part play "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" had 10.

Best Actress in a play victor Glenda Jackson, recognised for work in "Three Tall Women", praised the multi-cultural nature of the theatre business.

Cohosted by Sara Bareilles and Josh Groban and presented by the American Theater Wing and the Broadway League, the Tonys were televised on CBS from Radio City Music Hall in NY.

"I never dreamed that one day I, a Brit of all things, would be honoured with the same lifetime award that my idol won, by my peers and the true home of the musical, Broadway".

Sunday night's ceremony was a refreshing antidote to eyerolls that may have greeted the nominations, led by splashy commercial titles like Mean Girls and SpongeBob SquarePants: The Musical.
