Raccoon Scaling St. Paul Skyscraper Sets Off Social Media Firestorm

On Tuesday, a brown raccoon in downtown St. Paul, Minnesota, climbed more than 20 stories up the side of the UBS Plaza, causing waves of anxiety across the nation.

It was dubbed the #MPRraccoon because Minnesota Public Radio, whose offices are in a nearby building, documented the animal's long, odd trip.

It brought an end to a day of drama as people around the world anxious that the basketball-sized raccoon would lose its grip as it climbed or slip off a window ledge hundreds of feet above the light rail tracks running down Cedar Street in St. Paul.

According to Nelson, when a maintenance crew managed to get the animal to leave the ledge, it only jumped onto a nearby building. At one point, a small crowd had gathered on the street to see what would happen next.

Then it started to climb.

Onlookers and reporters tracked the critter's progress as it scaled the 25-storey UBS Tower.

People encouraged the raccoon to "hang in there".

Paige Donnelly Law, who is also on the 23rd floor, tweeted that they were told live traps have been put on the roof of the building in hopes the raccoon will make it up there.

As night descended on St. Paul, the raccoon appeared to start climbing down, before reversing course.

The Twitter account says the little creature was heading back down the building before settling in for a nap.
