As many foreign policy experts, religious leaders, and human rights advocates have pointed out, denuclearizing the Korean peninsula is a critical security goal.

If it doesn't, it could amp up tensions even more.

BBC Monitoring reports and analyses news from TV, radio, web and print media around the world.

"Any agreement must instead lead to the dismantling of every aspect of north Korea's nuclear missile program, including the country's sizable fissile material stockpile", she said in a Monday statement, also urging Trump to opt against allowing to Kim to secure commitments about reducing the size of the US military footprint in the region.

He said after that, a more "tactical" result could come in regards to North Korea's potential denuclearization.

But Cha said success for Trump on Tuesday is easier to describe - "a definitive commitment" from Kim to give up his nuclear arms and long-range missiles while also agreeing to a process for future talks.

TRT World spoke to Mark Shanahan, a lecturer in politics and global relations at Reading University in England, for more.

The US president had told reporters in Canada that he "felt confident" about Tuesday's talks with Kim.

There was speculation that the summit might continue into a second day, however Mr Trump is now scheduled to leave Singapore on Tuesday evening. "Chairman Kim thanked Prime Minister Lee for Singapore's hosting of the US-DPRK Summit", the document adds. He left early, and as he flew to Singapore, he tweeted that he was yanking the USA out of the traditional group statement.

He continued to tweet angrily at Trudeau from Singapore, saying Monday "Fair Trade is now to be called Fool Trade if it is not Reciprocal".

Trump threatens USA allies on trade as he exits G7 summit
The United States would not back off from its tough stance in negotiations with trading partners, Trump said . At his news conference, Trump first referred to the Crimean annexation only obliquely.

He warned that if Washington, Seoul and Pyongyang sign a peace treaty to formally end the state of war on the peninsula without Beijing, "China has the right to nullify it". Trump later accused the New York Times of quoting a senior White House official "who doesn't exist". The official wasn't authorized to discuss the plans and insisted on anonymity.

What was initially portrayed by the White House as a summit meant to completely rid the North of its nuclear weapons is now being cast as a chance to "start a dialogue" and for Trump the dealmaker to look into the eyes and take the measure of his nuclear-armed antagonist. On the U.S. side, Trump was to be joined by Pompeo, chief of staff John Kelly, national security adviser John Bolton and U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Sung Kim, along with a few others.

Its state-run media are reporting extensively on Mr Kim's arrival in Singapore, with KCNA publishing three reports detailing his departure from Pyongyang, arrival in Singapore and meeting with Singaporean Premier Lee Hsien Loong.

The Worm has visited North Korea on multiple occasions and competed on Celebrity Apprentice in 2013.

But North Korea now deems itself "a nuclear state", and insists the USA must end its "nuclear threats and blackmail" as a precondition for denuclearization, according to a statement last month from First Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Kim Kye Gwan. Kim finished off the night with a walk along a pedestrian bridge near the city's Merlion Park.

Dressed in his trademark, ill-fitting, dark gray Mao suit, and sweating in Singapore's tropical humidity, Kim visited some of Singapore's most famous tourist attractions.

"We've got a very interesting meeting. tomorrow, and I just think it's going to work out very nicely", Trump said on Monday. "As you know, that would be a first step", Trump told reporters June 7 during a joint news conference with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at the White House.

There was speculation throughout the day over whether Kim Jong Un had taken his private jet- an Ilyushin IL-62M - from Pyongyang, but official photos released by the Singaporean Ministry of Communications and Information showing Kim meeting Balakrishnan on the tarmac appear to reveal that he flew to Singapore aboard an Air China Boeing 747.

Beating expectations is central to President Trump's political brand.
