The China incidents affect one of the most important of the seven USA diplomatic outposts in the country.

Two other officials said that the victims brought for examination at the University of Pennsylvania, which doctors studied the cases previous year in Cuba and the new U.S. Consulate in China.

A previous statement in May only mentioned the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou as the location for the health alert, though it was sent to US citizens throughout the country.

"If the U.S. makes formal contact with us, China will continue necessary investigations in an earnest and responsible manner and maintain close communication and cooperation with the U.S.", Hua said at a regularly scheduled news conference.

More recently, U.S. diplomats in China also complained of symptoms similar to the ones suffered by colleagues in Cuba.

The official explained that out of privacy considerations, no further details could be provided, but noted that an update will be provided when the medical evaluations are complete.

However, the President of the European Council on Friday rejected a call by Trump and Conte on the first day of the annual summit. Trump has said that Russian Federation should have been readmitted to the negotiations.

Doctors said in February that the symptoms among some 24 Havana embassy staffers were similar to those caused by concussions - headaches, balance problems, sleep disturbances and visual and hearing difficulties. "The Ministry of Foreign Relations reiterates that no evidence of the alleged incidents has been presented, and maintains its unwavering commitment to cooperate with USA authorities".

People working in The Canton Place complex, a few kilometers (miles) from the consulate, said they were just hearing about the incidents, reflecting a lack of coverage in China's entirely state-controlled media. American investigators have not yet determined who or what is causing the symptoms and illnesses.

The State Department has sent a medical team to China to offer medical screenings to all American government workers and family members who want them.

Recall that from China sent several American diplomats and their family members to undergo medical examinations.

The alert comes as a US medical team is screening more Americans who work at the Guangzhou consulate. The Guangzhou consulate opened months after the establishment of diplomatic relations between Beijing and Washington in 1979 and moved to its new purpose-built facility in 2013.
