Trump commutes Alice Johnson’s sentence after meeting Kardashian-West

She was then handed a sentence of life with no chance of parole, plus another 25 years.

Discussing the issue on Thursday night's episode of The Project, host Waleed Aly slammed Kardashian's involvement in Johnson's pardon.

Johnson, 63, was serving a life sentence for a nonviolent drug offense.

This is the latest celebrity-backed act of clemency from Trump, who has embraced his constitutional authority to pardon and shorten prison sentences for people convicted of federal crimes. "Because I felt like she's was a good person-you can see that in her", Kardashian said in the exclusive interview.

Kardashian said after hearing about Johnson's story she made a decision to act.

While Johnson was deserving of clemency, the manner in which her case was brought to Trump's attention was unprecedented and raises fairness concerns, said Margaret Love, a lawyer who formerly served as the U.S. Pardon Attorney in the Justice Department.

Ivanka Trump was one of the first people she called to plead Johnson's case, Kardashian said. As soon as she stepped out of the van, she ran toward waiting family members who greeted her with hugs, flowers and tears. Ms. Johnson has been in prison for the past two decades.

Johnson was convicted in 1996 on eight criminal counts related to a Memphis-based cocaine trafficking operation.

"You now have a president who effectively thinks he can do things by pardons".
