U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez has fended off a primary challenger and will be the Democratic nominee in New Jersey's only statewide race this fall. "He will make a BIG difference!"

Yet frightening scenarios exist for both parties.

Hugin, a former Marine and Princeton University graduate, has promised to serve as an independent voice for Democrat-leaning New Jersey, where Trump is unpopular among many voters.

Much of Tuesday's focus was on California, however.

Democratic U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez was seeking his party's nod for another term on Tuesday.

Then he or she would hand the ballot back to the official who would insert it into an electronic voting machine.

Across the country in Montclair, N.J., Lynnette Joy Baskinger, a psychotherapist, said she's fed up with the Republicans. If Grisham wins, she'd be the state's second Latino state executive.

Grossman has said he would "forcefully" defend President Donald Trump's agenda.

Democrats want to take the 2nd District, the only Republican-held seat in New Mexico's congressional delegation. In California's unusual top-two primary system, all these Democrats and Republicans are competing on the same ballot. That allows the possibility of two candidates from the same party qualifying.

So many Democrats are vying to challenge Rohrabacher that there is a chance they will divide their party's vote, setting up a general election fight between the incumbent and a leading Republican opponent, Scott Baugh.

Rosendale has GOP establishment support, but that may not be a plus for Montana Republican voters.

Democrats have aimed their most aggressive attacks at Rosendale, seizing on his background in Maryland and questions about his experience as a rancher. Diane Feinstein is running for another term.

Many of these Southern California districts are crowded with Democratic candidates.

Roby was the first member of Congress to withdraw her endorsement of the Republican president in 2016 after he was caught on video bragging about grabbing women's genitals.

Alabama, Iowa, Mississippi, New Jersey, New Mexico and South Dakota also have primary races today. Democrat Tony Mendoza, who resigned from the state Senate amid allegations that he sexually harassed his staffers, is running for his old seat.
