Harvey Weinstein will be ‘charged with rape following sexual abuse allegations

Flinching when he heard himself described as a man who used power to prey on women, Harvey Weinstein was arraigned Friday on rape and other charges in the first criminal prosecution to result from the wave of allegations against him that sparked a national reckoning over sexual misconduct.

In a statement to the Hollywood Reporter, Rose McGowan, who has accused Weinstein of sexual assault and remains one of his most vocal critics, was among those reacting to news of his impending arrest.

Other actresses who have publicly accused Weinstein of sexual misconduct include Uma Thurman and Salma Hayek.

Weinstein has repeatedly denied accusations of non-consensual sex.

In addition to the allegations of numerous women, she's also reported on the powerful relationships across industries the movie producer used to help keep his accusers quiet.

"Assuming we get 12 fair people who are not consumed by the movement that seems to have overtaken this case", he said. "Mr. Weinstein has always maintained that he has never engaged in non-consensual sexual behavior with anyone".

When asked if she planned to be in the courtroom should Weinstein go to trial, she said "Yes", with a quiet laugh.

Weinstein agreed to post the cash bail, CBC noted, surrender his passport, wear an electronic monitor, and not travel beyond the states of CT and NY. The Hollywood producer left the Manhattan courthouse through a back door. He is expected to be released on bail, but not before he surrenders his passport and is hooked up to an electric monitoring system. Brafman said the charges will not be believed by the jury, and that the case has been "overtaken" by the #MeToo movement - the worldwide movement against sexual harassment and assault.

Mr Weinstein turned himself in to police in the city earlier in the day. Asked "What can you say?" he mildly shook his head and softly said "No". "It's only if you intentionally committed a criminal act and Mr. Weinstein vigorously denies that".

Weinstein lumbered into a police station early Friday wearing a blazer and carrying books including "Something Wonderful: Rodgers and Hammerstein's Broadway Revolution", about the Broadway musical duo of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, and "Elia Kazan", about the famed film director. The rape charge involves a woman who has not come forward publicly; the other is a onetime aspiring actress who was among his first accusers. As millions of people follow Weinstein's perp walk to prison, the dozens of victims that accused Weinstein of sexual misconduct are sharing their reactions on social media. Joan llluzzi, said as she read the charges in New York Criminal Court.

"This is an emotional moment".

Brafman said in a May court filing that federal prosecutors in NY had opened a separate criminal investigation into the allegations. The board of the Weinstein Co fired him and the company filed for bankruptcy in March.

The Manhattan district attorney's office decided not to charge him in the case. The criminal sex act charge is believed to stem from the 2004 incident involving Lucia Evans, who claims Weinstein forced her to perform oral sex during a casting call.

Until the scandal, Weinstein was among the most influential forces in American film.

Mr Weinstein was sacked a year ago from his production firm, the Weinstein Company, which later filed for bankruptcy.

Brafman said in a May court filing that federal prosecutors in NY had opened a separate criminal investigation into the allegations.

Prosecutors in the office of the Manhattan district attorney, Cyrus R. Vance Jr., conducted dozens of interviews in NY and elsewhere and issued hundreds of subpoenas, and their inquiry is not over.

In a statement published by the Hollywood Reporter, Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance said that Friday's charges, "reflect significant progress in this active, ongoing investigation", adding, "I thank the fearless survivors who have come forward, and my office's prosecutors who have worked tirelessly on this investigation". Allegations have been mounting against Weinstein since last October.
