Arsene Wenger: Mikel Arteta has quality to become Arsenal manager

Even so, since announcing his departure from the club he has served so loyally, the focus has switched back to the glory years under Wenger - from the double-wining teams of 1998 and 2002 to the Invincibles of 2004.

It is Arteta, however, who has now prevailed in recent days as the seemingly chosen candidate, despite his lack of any managerial experience.

While the managerial vacancy remains - with two former club captains in Mikel Arteta and Patrick Vieira still among the favourites for the role - the club has wasted no time in clearing the decks for the new regime.

Arsenal have given the duty of making appointments to head of recruitment Sven Mislintat, who joined the club past year from German club Borussia Dortmund.

Now behind Tottenham and Chelsea as London's top team, the aim will be for Arteta to restore Arsenal to their former glory and implement new ideas in the capital.

The Arsenal executives, who is saddled with the responsible of choosing the new manager, are also understood to be holding talks on today May 17.

Arsene Wenger says Mikel Arteta has "all of the qualities" needed to succeed him as Arsenal manager.

Arteta would be happy to take a job more akin to that of a head coach.

The former Gunners midfielder, who currently works under Pep Guardiola as a coach at Manchester City , is now the frontrunner for the post after Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri all but removed himself from the running . The Spanish coach has made it clear he will not stand in Arteta's way should he want to take the job at the Emirates Stadium.

Wenger's own future remains uncertain as he contemplates his next move but he did advise Arsenal before he left that they should get their new man in place well ahead of this summer's World Cup.

Wenger continued: "I left a lot of experience behind me, people who were with me like Steve Bould who has six years experience, and Jens Lehmann too".

After hearing about Arsene Wenger leaving Arsenal, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp said the Frenchman has had a "fantastic" career and the Premier League will be "different" without him.
