Facebook Suspends 200 Apps, Begins Investigation

Facebook says it has suspended around 200 apps so far as part of data misuse audit

Data such as phone numbers, private messages, and religious views, taken from as many as 87 million Facebook users was allegedly used to influence voters in the 2016 U.S. election.

Today, Facebook's VP of Product Partnerships Ime Archibong released an update on the audit.

Thousands of apps have already been investigated by internal and external experts.

Facebook is suspending 200 apps that may have leaked private data on large groups of users without their consent, as it looks for potential breaches similar to the one involving Cambridge Analytica.

Facebook stressed that the app developer who sold data to Cambridge Analytica did not have the right to do so, adding that the move was in violation of Facebook's terms of service agreement.

The social networking site made a policy change in the year 2014, which limited the access to user data but it noted some apps had obtained data prior to the revision.

Former Malaysian PM banned from leaving country
Mahathir also named former Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin as home affairs minister and Mohamad Sabu as defense minister. He has also vowed to abolish the 6 per cent goods and services tax implemented in 2015 and to reintroduce fuel subsidies.

The company said users could check this website to learn whether they or their friends installed an app that misused data before 2015, according to the blog post.

Facebook is looking at all apps that "had access to large amounts of information" before 2014, when the company locked down access to such data. "And if we find developers [who] misused personally identifiable information, we will ban them and tell everyone affected by those apps". Facebook also declined to comment on what marks these apps as suspicious, but did say it would notify people if their data had been misused after the review process is complete.

Yet another rogue Facebook app that gathered and sold "intimate" details on millions of users has come to light.

As a result of this process, Archibong says Facebook auditors have suspended "around 200 [apps]" for potentially misusing Facebook data. The suspended apps were, however, were not banned permanently.

When asked during his testimony how long it would take Facebook to sift through all its apps, Zuckerberg said "months..."

"We are investing heavily to make sure this investigation is as thorough and timely as possible, concluded Archibong".
