Former Malaysian PM banned from leaving country

Ousted Malaysian leader Najib Razak prevented from leaving country

While Mahathir's former protege turned political enemy Anwar Ibrahim is on the road to a full political rehabilitation after Mahathir followed through on his promise to ask Malaysia's Monarch to grant the jailed Anwar a full pardon, the real movers and shakers of the new coalition will be the members of the Democratic Action Party (DAP) for they represent the clearest break with the past for Malaysian politics.

Mahathir plans to have a small Cabinet of up to 25 members, with at least 10 of the posts filled by next week.

Since 1974, the finance minister had been a Muslim Malay.

He is the first ethnic Chinese to hold the post in 44 years in a country that has to manage tensions between the majority Malay group and minorities, and where economic advantages are given to ethnic Malays.

But the 92-year-old - the world's oldest elected leader - added that "action" would be taken if false news was disseminated with the intention to cause chaos.

But he also said that, in a conversation with Mahathir, he had raised PKR's demand for "more inclusive negotiation", a reference to the formation of the cabinet.

One of its leaders over the weekend said Mahathir had failed to consult the party when he offered the interior, defence, and finance portfolios to leaders of other parties.

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams said Harry , 33, and Meghan, 36, might return the favour, "if they know each other well". Markle's father, Thomas Markle, will walk his daughter down the aisle , despite previous reports that suggested otherwise.

"I was already informed that the immigration department of Malaysia doesn't allow me and my family to foreign countries", Najib said in a tweet moments later. He has also vowed to abolish the 6 per cent goods and services tax implemented in 2015 and to reintroduce fuel subsidies.

Far from just being an ideal situation, this is the new reality of Malaysian politics where an old experienced leader has teamed up with a multipolar minded and multiracial minded party to help form the core of a new political programme for all Malaysians. The former administration under Najib Razak had narrowed the deficit over time to 3 percent of gross domestic product, while pledging to keep debt under 55 percent of GDP. But he pledged that policy "would be in order to restore confidence in the economy that's been affected by scandal after scandal, especially 1MDB".

Financial markets had been betting on Najib remaining in power, and the currency and stocks are set for more volatility when markets reopen on Monday.

Mahathir was himself accused of fake news, after authorities said they were investigating him for false claims that his plane was sabotaged ahead of the May 9 election.

Mahathir said last week that there was enough evidence to investigate Najib's links to the 1MDB scandal, and had moved to prevent his predecessor from leaving the country. He then became finance minister for a few months in 1999.

Others on the council are economist KS Jomo and Hassan Marican, former president at state oil company Petroliam Nasional Bhd, as well as palm oil tycoon Robert Kuok, whose fortune is valued at US$19.9 billion, according to Bloomberg calculations.

Mahathir also named former Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin as home affairs minister and Mohamad Sabu as defense minister.
