Former Seattle Seahawks coach Chuck Knox died after battling a lengthy battle with dementia, KIRO-TV reported.

A three-time Associated Press NFL Coach of the Year victor, Knox had a career record of 186-147.

While Knox is believed to have passed away this past Saturday, March 12, 2018, news of his death was not announced to the public until the following Sunday.

Knox compiled a file of 186-147-1 in 22 seasons with the Rams, Seahawks and Buffalo Payments.

Knox went 80-63 in the regular season during nine years as the Seahawks' head coach, earning him the distinction as the second-winningest coach in franchise history, behind Mike Holmgren's 86 victories.

Besides the Seahawks, the coach nicknamed "Ground Chuck" took the Los Angeles Rams and the Buffalo Bills to the playoffs and was three times named National Football League coach of the year.

Known as "Ground Chuck" for his emphasis on his team's running game, Knox coached the Seahawks from 1983-91.

"His presence projected an exterior toughness, however merited instantaneous respect by the real care and concern he held for his gamers", the group stated in an announcement. He was also inducted into the Seahawks' Ring of Honor in 2005. "He was one of many nice influences not exclusively in soccer, however in life". He became the second winning coach in the team's history. "He always took the time to know each player well enough that he could talk to each player and hit their hot buttons". "It was as insane and as fun a locker room as I had ever seen, and as enjoyable a flight home as the Seahawks have ever had until they won a Super Bowl Championship". He ended his career coaching three more seasons with the Rams. Knox took the head coaching position in Seattle in 1983.
