Boston Dynamics Plans to Start Selling Their Robot Dog 'SpotMini' Year

On Thursday, Boston Dynamics showed how its upcoming robot dog, the SpotMini, can flawlessly navigate across an office campus - all on its own. "For instance, we have a surveillance package where we have special cameras that can mount on the back", Raibert said.

The video demonstrates what this can look like from the machine's point of view; it showed an internal map of the SpotMini navigating from one point to the next, fully aware it needed to turn a corner.

Atlas can also open doors, lift objects like boxes and do a backflip. But it's not just the arm that impresses, it's also the incredibly fluid and lifelike movement of the SpotMini.

Its other projects include Spot, a dog-like robot; Handle, a robot with legs and wheels, which can pick up heavy loads and manoeuvre over tough terrain; and WildCat, the world's fastest robot on four legs.

SpaceX will try again to launch its newest Falcon 9 rocket
EDT (20:14 GMT) and performed a ideal satellite launch that erased the memory of yesterday afternoon's boggled attempt. SpaceX has no plans to use its Falcon Heavy, which is now the most powerful rocket in operation, to fly humans.

And now, we're a step closer to being able to see the action of this robot up close and personal. Earlier this year, Boston Dynamics released a video showing the SpotMini opening a door for another robot. It's doing so to help another SpotMini-built with no arm-pass through. It weighs in at 66 pounds and can go for around 90 minutes on a single charge. The SpotMini robots are expected to be used for security patrols or in construction companies to keep tabs on what's happening at building sites.

There is no word yet on what the pup will cost, but the company claims their latest prototype costs 10 times less to build than its previous version.

The most recent SpotMini design appears to incorporate sensors on the front and sides of its main body that help it understand its environment.

Updated on May 13: The SpotMini will go on sale in 2019.
