A 5-year-old girl was seriously injured early Sunday morning after a bear attacked her outside her Colorado home when she went to investigate a noise in the yard, officials said.

The five-year-old girl was attacked by a "big black bear" outside her home.

The attack happened early Sunday near Grand Junction, about 240 miles (386 kilometers) west of Denver.

The girl allegedly was outside because she thought she heard her dog making noises.

But the girl's mother heard her daughter screaming and went outside to see a "large black bear" dragging her daughter, CPW officials said.

The woman screamed and the bear dropped the girl, who suffered serious injuries.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife says officers are tracking the bear with the help of federal wildlife officers. People living or staying in the Grand Junction area are asked to secure their trash, keep pet food inside, and immediately report any bear sightings to Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

According to local news outlet KJCT 8, the 5-year-old's father, Duane Cyr, announced his daughter is no longer in serious condition and will survive after being attacked.

At this time, authorities are still trying to track down the black bear that attacked the child.
