DHS Sec. Was 'Close' To Resigning Over Trump Tantrum, Hasn't Done So

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen testifies during a hearing held by the Senate Judiciary Committee

Kirstjen Nielsen, the homeland security secretary, told colleagues she was close to resigning after President Donald Trump berated her Wednesday in front of the entire Cabinet for what he said was her failure to adequately secure the nation's borders, according to several current and former officials familiar with the episode.

She had even gone so far as to draft a resignation letter, according to the Times.

Nielsen, 45, who was named to the post after John Kelly was named chief of staff, oversees 20,000 border agents through Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

A spokesperson from Nielsen's office denied the existence of such a letter to the Times, and White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told the outlet that "the president is committed to fixing our broken immigration system and our porous borders" when asked to comment on the content of the Wednesday meeting.

Following the release of the report, Nielsen said in a statement that Trump "is rightly frustrated" on border security issues.

Two senior White House officials described Nielsen as upset after the meeting, but said they were unaware of such a letter or threats to resign.

But DHS spokesman Tyler Q. Houlton called the claims "false".

Since last week, another four people have gone into kidney failure, and an additional 23 have been sickened overall. Robert Tauxe, director of CDC's Division of Foodborne, Waterborne, and Environmental Diseases, said previously.

He declined to say whether Nielsen had been treated fairly in the meeting, saying only, "We had a good Cabinet meeting", during a brief question-and-answer session in the White House Rose Garden.

Nielsen reportedly pushed back at points, and argued that she was constrained by American immigration laws-a position Attorney General Jeff Sessions supported. "I share his frustration", Nielsen said, according to CNN.

"I think we should fold all of the TPS people that have been here for a considerable period of time and find a way for them to be on a path to citizenship", Kelly said.

She added that there was some credence to Trump's frustration, citing "loopholes" and "lack of congressional inaction" that have prevented tougher border laws.

A lingering belief that Trump has reportedly held onto was that Nielsen was resisting his idea of separating children from their families when they cross the US-Mexico border illegally. This "tantrum" went on for 30 minutes, which it noted was unusually long for one of Trump's anger outbursts, and left other officials in the room feeling uncomfortable.

Trump said Saturday the US might have to "close up our country" to get better control of its borders. Over the past year, the president has been systematically ending Temporary Protected Status for immigrant groups who were granted amnesty in the United States following natural disasters or political upheaval in their own countries.
