Iraq used Baghdadi aide's cell phone to capture top Daesh commanders

President Trump announced Thursday on Twitter that several leaders of the terror group ISIS were apprehended in a recent operation.

"#Iraq captures 5 key Daesh leaders during #OperationRoundup".

Iraq captured five Daesh commanders after its intelligence services lured them into crossing from neighbouring Syria, Iraqi state TV reported on Wednesday.

The US-led coalition used this information to launch an airstrike in mid-April that killed 39 suspected ISIS members near Hajin, in the Deir el-Zour district of Syria, the second official said.

Hashimi described Eithawi and Jamal as the two most senior Islamic State figures ever to be captured alive.

Officials then got Ithawi to persuade the other ISIS officials to move closer to a trap set up by Iraqi and American forces, where they were arrested.

Baghdadi, who declared himself ruler of all Muslims in 2014 after capturing Iraq's main northern city Mosul, is now believed to be hiding in the Iraqi-Syrian border region after losing all the cities and towns of his self-proclaimed caliphate. An official said of al-Baghdadi: "His movements are discreet and he never travels in a convoy".

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said last month he would "take all necessary measures" against militants based in Syria.

We will remind that on may 6, military-air forces of Iraq attacked a position of the command of the ISIS terrorists in Syria.

Around one million soldiers, police and other security personnel were voting across Iraq on Thursday in the first national elections since the country declared victory over the Islamic State group.

Islamic State, however, continues to carry out bombings, assassinations and ambushes, and remains active in neighbouring Syria where it has also lost most of its territory.
