Local elections: No clear victor, Labour and Tories neck and neck

A mixed set of election results saw Theresa May shrug off a hard week as Prime Minister as she hailed Conservative "success" while Jeremy Corbyn pointed to "solid" progress despite failing to secure key targets.

"The Conservative Party has been reminded tonight that the electorate that it now has is disproportionately a "Leave" electorate", polling expert John Curtice told the BBC.

The UK Independence Party (UKIP), which has seen its support collapse since cheerleading the 2016 vote for Brexit, was all but wiped out while the pro-European Liberal Democrats made the biggest gains.

Jeremy Corbyn has cancelled a visit to Barnet after the council fell to the Tories amid widespread anger among the area's Jewish population about anti-Semitism in the Labour Party.

But Labour admitted "mixed" results despite a tough week for May, who has been plagued by cabinet divisions over Brexit as well as a row over immigration that toppled one of her top ministers.

"It is hard to avoid the conclusion that the Labour Party performed less well in wards that have quite a lot of people from the Jewish community".

But it failed to gain any London boroughs from the Tories despite a concerted campaign in the capital.

Matt Singh of Number Cruncher Politics noted: "Opposition parties are supposed to do well in mid-term contests, and these aren't the results of one that's about to storm the next general election".

He wrote on Twitter: "Almost everywhere that @PeoplesMomentum held #Unseat campaign events, Labour made gains - some big - and the Tories lost seats".

There was success too for the Conservatives outside the capital, where the anti-EU UKIP Party's vote collapsed. The Tories lost 31 and defended key councils like Wandsworth, and Labour didn't quite achieve as many as planned but still gained 59 seats.

Host of the 2026 FIFA World Cup remains a mystery
Trump's comments came in the context of highlighting American assistance to Nigeria and follow a veiled threat to withhold U.S. The FIFA Congress meets June 13 in Moscow to select the 2026 host, and a majority of the 207 voting FIFA members is needed.

He told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "Think of the Black Death in the Middle Ages".

May will remain under pressure from rival Conservative factions: those who want to keep close ties with the EU by staying in the customs union, and others who say anything short of a clean break is a betrayal of the Brexit referendum result.

Labour councillors celebrate in Trafford, after Conservatives lost overall control over the council.

The Conservatives held Kensington and Chelsea, where the council had faced severe criticism over last year's devastating Grenfell Tower fire that killed 71 people, with a slightly reduced majority.

Labour MP Chuka Umunna called for an internal inquiry into the party's campaign, warning that the results can not leave it confident of success at the next national poll.

Meanwhile, in Worthing, the Conservatives won eight seats, Labour four, and the Liberal Democrats one.

The Lib Dems also won neighbouring Kingston upon Thames from the Conservatives.

"We have to do better if we're going to be in government", said Lady Smith, Labour's leader in the House of Lords.

Local elections often have low turnouts, so, it is unsurprising that the supposed whitewash of the Conservatives never materialised, most voting projections are based on a voter turnout that similar to a general election.

A Survation poll on Wednesday in London showed Labour 20 percentage points ahead of the Conservatives.
