In a surprising development, Jammu and Kashmir's deputy chief minister and a BJP leader, Nirmal Singh, has resigned.

Seen as a desperate bid to have an image makeover in the wake of growing mistrust in its core constituency of the Jammu region, BJP has pushed five new faces for inclusion in ministry in the eagerly awaited rejig taking place today.

Sources said the high command may drop two of the Cabinet rank Ministers and elevate two Ministers of State to Cabinet rank.

Jammu and Kashmir governor NN Vohra will administer the oath of office and secrecy to those being inducted into the council of ministers on Monday noon, an invitation for the ceremony read. The ceremony has been shifted to this venue because the durbar has closed and shifted to Srinagar.

The names doing the rounds for ministerial berths include BJP state unit president Sat Sharma, Assembly Speaker Kavinder Gupta, Sukhnandan Choudhary, Shakti Parihar, Rajesh Jasrota, and Ravinder Raina.

The BJP had on April 17 asked all its nine ministers in the coalition government to submit their resignations to bring in new faces in the two-year-old Mufti cabinet. Sources also said that PDP too has cleared the induction of its three time MLA from Pulwama constituency Khail Bandh as Minister to fill the position vacated by the resignation of Haseeb Drabu recently.

The reshuffle is likely to be confined to the BJP as Mehbooba has not given her mind whether she will carry out the exercise among the ministers of her PDP. Two ministers, Lal Singh and Chander Prakash Ganga had resigned earlier when Mehbooba took a serious note of their participation in a meeting of the Hindu Ekta Manch and supporting the demand for CBI probe into the rape-murder of a minor girl in the Kathua district. Normally, the oath-taking ceremonies take place at Raj Bhawan.
