Indian shares rise; TCS market cap crosses $100 bln

The Sensex was up 140.70 points or 0.41 per cent at 34,556.28 and the Nifty up 45.95 points or 0.43 per cent at 10,610.

Sectoral indices, led by realty, FMCG, auto, banks and consumer durables, were trading in the positive zone with gains of up to 0.93 per cent.

The top losers were: Wipro, down 3.30 per cent at Rs 287.05; Infosys, down 2.49 per cent at Rs 1,153.90; Tata Steel, down 1.23 per cent at Rs 598.25; State Bank of India, down 0.87 per cent at Rs 240.60; and Tata Consultancy Services, down 0.87 per cent at Rs 3,385.65.

The BSE Sensex after opening at 34,593.17 points touched a high of 34,611.73 and low of 34,536.70 points. In the broader market, the BSE Midcap and the BSE Smallcap indices remained little changed. Hong Kong's Hang Seng lost 1.1 percent to 30,281.15.

Meanwhile, domestic institutional investors (DIIs) bought shares worth a net Rs 387.26 crore, while foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) sold shares worth Rs 259.08 crore yesterday, provisional data released by the stock exchanges showed. Medical equipment maker Terumo Corp stumbled 3.4 per cent and SoftBank shed 1.0 per cent, collectively knocking 25 points off the Nikkei.

The BSE IT index rose after rupee fell to a 14-month low of 66.825 against the dollar on bouts of month-end dollar demand from importers amid crude price volatility and rising United States bond yields.

Domestic indices were trading flat owing to weak Asian cues. The BSE Sensex rallied 165.87 to settle at 34,616.64 and the NSE Nifty ended 29.65 points higher at 10,614.35.

Asian shares fell on Wednesday as a rise in USA. bond yields to 3 percent and warnings from bellwether U.S. companies of higher costs drove fears that corporate earnings growth may peak soon.

On the other hand, shares of Bharti Airtel fell 0.94 percent and IDFC Bank dropped 0.10 percent, ahead of their Q4 results scheduled to announce today.
