Leaders from the 53-nation Commonwealth nations are meeting in Windsor Castle Friday, without official agenda but are widely expected to discuss protecting the world's oceans, cybersecurity and who should become the next leader of the Commonwealth.

While Queen Elizabeth has been head of the Commonwealth since 1952 the role does not necessarily go to the British monarch and is up to the members to decide. Charles had always been expected to take on the role even though it is not strictly hereditary.

Yesterday the Queen was keen to make the Prince of Wales the new leader, saying it was her "sincere wish" that he takes over.

This week's meeting has been the last of its kind that the...

"It is my honest wish that the Commonwealth will continue to offer stability and continuity for future generations - and will decide that one day the Prince of Wales will carry on the important work started by my father [King George VI] in 1949", she had said in her speech at Buckingham Palace.

The Prince of Wales was unanimously endorsed as the next head of the Commonwealth by world leaders, Theresa May has said.

During her press conference address Mrs May said that the Chogm summit had "demonstrated that the Commonwealth is united not only by a common history but by a common future - a future in which we work together for the benefit of all our citizens and for the wider world". On the sidelines, she held a almost 30-minute one-on-one meeting with the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, during which the two leaders held talks on a wide range of bilateral issues, with a particular focus on development cooperation, according to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

Moments before she spoke, Prince Charles made an informal pitch to take over leading the group of 53 nations, offering a small reminder of his commitment to the Commonwealth.

The Commonwealth represents about 2.4 billion people, but critics say the organisation is so disparate that it struggles to know what it is for, BBC royal correspondent Jonny Dymond said. "We remember with equal fondness the warmth and graciousness of her welcome when she hosted President John Agyekum Kufuor, during the state visit he paid to Britain in 2007, to commemorate the happy anniversary of Ghana's Golden Jubilee, i.e. the fiftieth year of Ghana's independence from British colonial rule", he added.

"As another birthday approaches this week, I am reminded of the extraordinary journey we have been on, and how much good has been achieved", the queen shared.

The role is not automatic, like the line to the British Throne, and there had been some talk of rotating the leadership position between other countries.
