British 500-Kg World War II bomb disposal to force evacuation in Berlin today

German police removing a 500kg World War II bomb found near Berlin's Hauptbahnhof main railway station.

United Kingdom bomb, which is now being defused, was found at Heidestrasse street, after which police ordered all the buildings located within a 800-meter (over 2,600 feet) radius of the explosive to be evacuated, Der Tagesspiegel media outlet reported.

Long-distance and local train transport at the central station was disrupted for several hours, but police said on Twitter that the station had now reopened.

Among them were workers at the Economy Ministry who were told to work from other offices or from home, or were simply given the day off, a spokeswoman said.

Police said the 500kg (1,100lb) bomb, believed to have been made in the United Kingdom, posed no immediate danger but the operation was expected to cause transport chaos in the German capital.

More student demonstrations planned on Columbine anniversary
In addition to the walkout, students are planning to protest Friday evening at the Ohio Statehouse. ABC Action News reached out to school districts across the Bay area about the planned events.

Bomb disposal experts were able to successfully remove the detonator just after 1 p.m. and destroy it in a small controlled explosion.

Police said a number of WW2 bombs had found in this area earlier too. Police went door to door to check the area was empty of people before their specialist team began defusing the bomb.

Even 73 years after the end of the war, such discoveries remain common in major German cities.

Flights to and from Tegel airport - about 7km away - were not affected by the evacuation.

Berlin is set to hold a large-scale evacuation Friday to allow experts to defuse a 1,100-pound World War II explosive. Berlin was reduced to ruins in 1945 and about 3000 unexploded bombs are believed to be still lying buried in the city.
