Mr Bush, the nation's 41st president, has also suffered health issues, and spent a period in intensive care for pneumonia past year.

Politicians from both sides of the aisle took to social media Sunday afternoon to send messages of support to First Lady Barbara Bush, who a source close to her says is in declining health, according to CNN. A Bush family spokesman said she was being cared for at her home.

She "will instead focus on comfort care", the statement said, Reuters reported.

The statement did not reveal the nature of Mrs Bush's ailments. As her husband's career began to flourish, Barbara remained family-centric, once saying, "At the end of your life, you will never regret not having passed one more test, not winning one more verdict or not closing one more deal". "I'm not sure God will recognize me; I have so many new body parts!"
