Israeli army denies deliberate murder of Palestinian journalist

Observers sought an global investigation into the war crimes and said that the use of lethal force by the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) against unarmed civilians and those protected under worldwide law is a clear violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention.

Haaretz reports that, according to Hamas' Gaza Health Ministry, the seven dead Palestinians were killed by the Israel Defense Force (IDF). Palestinians also reportedly sent a nine-year-old girl through the fence, but Israeli forces were able to send her safely back.

Meanwhile, demonstrations continued throughout the day as hundreds of Palestinians set tires ablaze along the Gaza-Israel border fence in order to confuse Israeli Army snipers and impede visibility.

Gaza's economy has been devastated by years of Israeli military attacks and a joint Israeli-Egyptian blockade.

The journalist, Yasser Murtaja, 30, had been known to use a drone for photos and video, but two journalists who were with him said he had not been using it on Friday.

Many of those killed were militants, said Israel, which stationed sharpshooters on the frontier to stop Palestinians attempting "any breach of the security infrastructure and fence, which protects Israeli civilians".

Large groups of youths have ventured much closer to the no-go zone along the barrier, risking live fire from Israeli troops to roll burning tires and throw stones.

Hamas's leader in Gaza, Yahya Sinwar, hailed the protests and condemned Israel's blockade of the Gaza Strip.

In a visit to Khuzaa camp on Friday, Yahya Sinwar, Hamas' Gaza chief, told the gathered crowd that the "Israeli plan of starvation and siege" had "failed to incite the Palestinian people against the resistance".

For a second week in a row, the United States blocked a U.N. Security Council statement supporting the right of Palestinians to demonstrate peacefully and endorsing Guterres' call for an independent investigation into the deadly protests in Gaza. Mourners and journalists carried Murtaja's body through the streets of Gaza during his funeral on Saturday.

Israeli police say a Palestinian who tried to stab an Israeli in the West Bank has been shot.

"Concerning rules of engagement, soldiers treat any activity putting Israel's security in danger as terrorist acts", he said.

Some have also called Friday's protest "Black Friday". But they have stopped short of specifically threatening a mass breach of the border fence.

Hundreds of protesters suffered other injuries, including tear gas inhalation.

With Israeli tear gas rising into the air, Palestinian youths used T-shirts, cheap medical masks and perfume to try to protect themselves.

"IDF troops fired toward them", the army said.

It is reported that the Palestinian press association denounced the murder of Murtaja, and announced plans to contact the International Court of Justice in The Hague regarding the matter.
